Thu 17 February 2022:
The Ukrainian military on Thursday accused Russian separatists of shelling the southeastern Donbas region on Thursday, hitting a kindergarten.
“Despite the fact that our positions were fired on with prohibited weapons, including 122 mm artillery, Ukrainian troops did not open fire in response,” a press officer of the Ukrainian Joint Forces Operation said, according to The Telegraph.
The separatists, in turn, accused Ukraine of conducting attacks using “mortars, grenade launchers and a machine gun in four separate incidents” in a statement that same day.
“Ukraine’s armed forces have crudely violated the ceasefire, using heavy weapons, which, according to the Minsk agreements, should be withdrawn.”
Moscow, according to Ukrainian officials, recently amassed more than 100,000 troops near Ukrainian borders, prompting fears that the Kremlin could be planning a military offensive against its neighbor.
Russia has denied that it is preparing to invade and accused Western countries of undermining its security through NATO’s expansion towards its borders.
