Wed 04 May 2022:

The Kremlin denied Russia was storming the Azovstal steel plant after Ukraine claimed Russian forces had launched a powerful assault on the plant.

“There is no storming,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding, “The order was publicly given by the supreme commander-in-chief to call off the assault.”

The Russian army has previously stated that it was targeting Azovstal with artillery and jets. Russian military have been bombarding Mariupol for weeks, with reports claiming the city is without water, food, or electricity.

At least 100 people were evacuated from the Azovstal steel complex, according to the UN. A convoy of at least 58 individuals had taken residents from Mangush, outside Mariupol, to Zaporizhzhia.

Sviatoslav Palamar, deputy commander of Ukraine’s Azov military unit, said Russia was attacking the Azovstal complex with armored vehicles and tanks, and that more troops was on the way.

President Zelensky had threatened to halt talks with Russia if Putin’s forces killed Ukraniana troops holed up at the plant.

“They cannot overpower Ukraine. But what is within their power still is to set fire to a children’s amusement park… or to blow up a bridge or grain storage,” Zelensky said in his latest remark.

Russia has carried out nearly 50 airstrikes in Ukraine’s eastern area, according to the defense ministry, and is “increasing the tempo of its offensive operation.”
