Sat 05 August 2023:

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosts a meeting for the National Security Advisors and representatives of a number of countries on the Ukrainian crisis in Jeddah on Saturday.

This comes in continuation of the humanitarian initiatives and efforts exerted by Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, in this regard.

Talks between the Crown Prince and the Russian and Ukrainian leaderships kicked off since the early days of the crisis, expressing the Kingdom’s readiness to exert its good offices to contribute to reaching a solution that will result in permanent peace.

The Kingdom also voiced its support for all efforts and initiatives aiming to reduce the impacts of the crisis and its humanitarian repercussions.

According to SPA, the Saudi government seeks from the meeting to reinforce dialogue and cooperation through the exchange of views, coordination, and deliberations at the international level on the ways to ensure a solution for the crisis through political and diplomatic means and in a way that strengthens international peace and security, sparing the world further humanitarian, security, and economic repercussions of the crisis.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday welcomed the wide range of countries represented in the talks that began on Saturday, including developing countries hit hard by the surge in food prices triggered by the war.

“This is very important because, on issues such as food security, the fate of millions of people in Africa, Asia and other parts of the world directly depends on how fast the world moves to implement the peace formula,” he said.

Zelenskyy said he hoped the initiative will lead to a “peace summit” of world leaders this autumn to endorse the principles, which he believed should be based on Kyiv’s 10-point formula for a settlement.

Ukraine’s formula includes respect for its territorial integrity and the withdrawal of Russian troops from territories that Moscow claims to have annexed.

Chinese special envoy to participate

The Chinese special envoy for Eurasian affairs Li Hui will participate in a meeting on the Ukrainian conflict resolution hosted by Saudi Arabia, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

“At the invitation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Chinese Government Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui will travel to Jeddah to attend an international meeting on Ukraine.

China is ready to cooperate with the international community to play a constructive role in promoting a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Keep an eye”

The forum excludes Russia, which has rejected Ukraine’s peace formula. The Kremlin said it will “keep an eye” on the meeting.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier this week that Russia would “need to understand what goals are set and what will be discussed”.

“Any attempt to promote a peaceful settlement deserves a positive evaluation,” he said.
