Sun 09 October 2022:

Serbian scientists have given a beetle the name of their country’s renowned tennis player Novak Djokovic crediting the insect’s speed, strength, flexibility, durability, and capacity to thrive in harsh conditions.

Duvalius Dokovici is the name given to the insect by researcher Nikola Vesovic. The insect is a member of the Duvalius genus of ground beetles, which is known to exist in Europe, according to local media reports.

Vesovic claims that the insect is a specialized underground Coleoptera beetle—a predator with no eyes living in a deep underground environment.

“I proposed to name the new species after Djokovic,” Vesovic told Tanjug news agency.

“He is the man who did much for this country. We feel urged to pay him back in the way we can.”

In an Instagram post, the scientist described the insect as “a specialised, blind, subterranean ground beetle (Coleoptera, Carabidae) found in a pit near the town of Ljubovija” in the west of the Balkan country.

Vsevic published the discovery in the journal “Annales Zoologi Fennici”,

A freshwater snail in Montenegro was recently given the tennis player’s name as well.

Meanwhile, Djokovic eventually made a comeback after a two-month absence. The 35-year-old tennis maverick, who has 21 Grand Slam titles to his name, recently won the Tel Aviv Open, his third championship of the year, following his seventh Wimbledon victory in July.
