Fri 11  November 2022:

With devastating natural disasters occurring all over the planet, the world is currently experiencing the effects of climate change. French senators have mandated that parking lots with 80 or more cars have at least half of the spaces covered with solar panels in an effort to reduce carbon footprint and promote the use of renewable energy.

The resolution still needs to advance in the upper chamber, Assemblée Nationale, despite having only been approved by the French Sénat on November 4.

The bill mandates that owners of big parking lots with 400 or more spaces install solar panels within three years. The equivalent of ten nuclear reactors’ worth of power, according to the French government, may be produced by these measures.

“We must not delay the implementation of the decarbonization of our economy,” reported forbes quoting Senator Agnès Pannier-Runacher speaking at the Senate debate.

Starting July 1, 2023, the law would come in effect and the car park owners would have to comply with it. The legislation approved by the French senate coincides with COP27 summit where the world leaders are reiterating their commitment towards mitigating climate change.

The concepts for France’s new energy policy were laid out earlier this year by French President Emmanuel Macron as part of the “France 2030” investment plan.

The goal of the strategy was for France to become energy independent. One billion euros were pledged by “France 2030” to support renewable energy innovation.

Macron had made plans to achieve the goal of making France the first big nation to break its dependence on fossil fuels. He asserted that it is only possible if France meets two requirements: lowering energy use and raising the capacity for the production of carbon-free electricity.
