Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said his government had expelled Iranian diplomats and closed Iran’s embassy in Mogadishu for spreading Shiism, Asharq Al Aswat reported.

Somali media quoted Sheikh Mahmoud as telling the Somali Scholars Conference on Tuesday (24 January, 2023) that the country’s intelligence service monitored Iranian moves to spread Shiite ideologies during his first presidential term that ended in 2017.

The Somali president added that Iran was implementing a “subversive agenda” through relief efforts, pointing to the involvement of Iranian diplomats and officials of humanitarian organizations in the case.

IS IRAN BEHIND SPREAD OF SHIISM IN GAZA?

Referring to “compelling evidence”, Sheikh Mahmoud said that he decided at the time to prohibit any Iranian presence in the country, by closing the Iranian embassy, and banning the activities of the Iranian Red Crescent and the Khomeini Charitable Foundation.

It is noteworthy that in 2014, Sudan also closed all Iranian cultural centres in the country and expelled the cultural attache and other diplomats.

Some press reports have suggested that the Sudanese government’s decision was motivated by warnings made by religious circles as well as the media about the spread of Shiite ideology among Sudanese youth after the intensification of activities by the office of the Iranian cultural attaché in Khartoum.
