Protesters Warn US-Backed Military Mission Could Draw Seoul Into Conflict
South Korean civic groups and political parties on Wednesday called on President Lee Jae Myung’s administration to reject US pressure to deploy Korean troops to the Strait of Hormuz.
Representatives of civic, labor, religious and other organisations held a press conference outside the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in central Seoul, urging Washington to withdraw its demand and Seoul to oppose any military deployment, local Newsis reported.
The groups warned that sending South Korean military assets to the strategic waterway would effectively make the country a participant in the conflict.
Lawmakers Kim Hyung-yeon of the Rebuilding Korea Party and Yoon Jong-oh of the Progressive Party also attended the press conference, according to Newsis.
Following the event, protesters marched toward the presidential office and announced plans for another anti-deployment demonstration on Saturday.

Seoul Assesses Strait Security
The protest comes as South Korea considers possible contributions to efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
The Defence Ministry said Tuesday that it had dispatched an assessment team to the United Arab Emirates to examine security conditions. However, it stressed that the mission did not presuppose a military deployment.
US President Donald Trump in March urged South Korea and four other countries to send warships to help protect the key shipping route.
Iran, meanwhile, warned Monday that any South Korean military involvement in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz would have “serious consequences.”
