Sat 25 January 2025:

Satellite-based communication provider Starlink will start beta testing for satellite-to-cellphone internet connections, it said Friday.

As announced by the firm’s billionaire owner Elon Musk, also a large political player in US and world politics, the company will start the test phase in three days.

Starting in 2018, Starlink sent 6,912 satellites in orbit, and 6,874 of them are currently working.

Starlink provides internet connections for many countries of the world, particularly in the US, without needing infrastructure.

Early in 2022, with the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, Starlink started providing service to the war-battered country.

But some countries see the service as a problem for their independence by breaching local rules, such as enabling access to banned websites.

Starlink, owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is a satellite internet service aiming to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access worldwide, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

Using a constellation of thousands of small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), Starlink offers internet speeds of up to 250 Mbps, with plans to improve further as more satellites are deployed.

Starlink has grown rapidly, with over 4,000 satellites launched as of 2025, and plans to scale up to 12,000 or more. It currently serves millions of customers in over 50 countries and has introduced specialized services for mobile users, RVs, and airplanes.

Future plans include expanding global coverage, reducing costs for consumers, and enhancing performance. Starlink is also exploring partnerships with governments and companies to support initiatives like disaster relief, military communication, and bridging the digital divide. Additionally, it aims to play a key role in SpaceX’s long-term vision of interplanetary connectivity, potentially providing internet on Mars.
