The National Commission for Missing Persons, formed after Assad’s fall last year, used cross-verified investigations to reach this conclusion with high certainty, notifying relatives privately first. Dr. al-Abbasi, a former chess champion whose case drew global attention, and her secretary’s fates remain unknown, as the commission continues seeking remains amid efforts to resolve 100,000 disappearances. Brother Hassan al-Abbasi shared the painful news: ‘With hearts filled with acceptance, we announce the martyrdom of our six children.’

In a statement, the commission said it informed family members of its findings before making any public announcement, in accordance with humanitarian and professional protocols that prioritize families’ right to know while safeguarding their dignity and psychological well-being. The commission said its conclusions were based on multiple investigations and cross-referenced analyses that underwent professional review and evaluation. Efforts to locate the children’s remains and determine where they may be buried are continuing in coordination with the relevant authorities.
Dr. Rania al-Abbasi, a prominent Syrian dentist and former national chess champion, was arrested by Assad regime forces, along with her husband, Abdulrahman al-Naimi, and their six children, from their home in Damascus in March 2013. At the time of their arrest, the oldest of the children was 14 and youngest aged two. The family disappeared without trace and became one of the most well-known cases of enforced disappearance under the Assad regime. For more than a decade, relatives and human rights organizations campaigned to uncover the family’s fate.
According to Amnesty International, On 9 March 2013 members of the Military Intelligence arrived at the home of dentist Rania al-Abbasi, her husband Abdul Rahman Yasin and their six children, Dima, Entisar, Najah, Alaa, Ahmed and Layan. On the security forces’ first visit to the home, which is located in the Damascus suburb of Mashroua Dummer, they arrested Abdul Rahman. The same security forces came back the next day and looted money, jewellery, the family cars, and the paperwork for their properties and Rania’s clinic. The following day, they returned again and arrested Rania, the six children, and Rania’s secretary. At the time of their arrest, Dima, Entisar, Najah, Alaa, Ahmed and Layan were respectively 14, 13, 11, eight, six and two years old.
Dr. Rania Al-Abbasi became widely known in Syria after she and her children were abducted by the Alawite minority Assad regime.

The entire family has not been heard of since that day, and the reason for their arrest is still unknown. However, family members believe Rania and her husband may have been targeted because they had provided humanitarian assistance to people in need.
The disappearance of the six children, who ranged in age from infancy to adolescence, came to symbolize the suffering of thousands of Syrian families searching for loved ones who vanished into the regime’s detention system. The commission did not disclose the evidence behind its findings, citing ongoing investigations.
