In a recent software update, Tesla stated that its cars are now monitoring for bumpy roads, such as potholes, to assist prevent them from damaging the cars by modifying the suspension.

According to Electrek, Tesla’s most recent software update has a cool-sounding capability that might greatly reduce underbody damage and possibly even driver damage.

The update (2022.20), according to the release notes, would allow Tesla vehicles to scan the road ahead for potholes and modify the suspension to take into consideration bumpy roads.

“Tesla Adaptive Suspension will now adjust ride height for an upcoming rough road section. This adjustment may occur at various locations, subject to availability, as the vehicle downloads rough road map data generated by Tesla vehicles,” the company was quoted as saying.

This is the first confirmation of the Tesla vehicle fleet scanning the roads to evaluate its conditions. For now, it is not about Autopilot, or Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta, navigating around those “rough road sections”, but Tesla adapting the suspension for those conditions, the report said. This feature is only going to be available in Tesla vehicles with adaptive suspension, like the new Model S and Model X

Tesla Autopilot will eventually be able to recognize potholes and create mini-maps to remember and avoid them, according to CEO Elon Musk’s predictions from 2020.

Tesla Autopilot, though still not quite there yet, can now be seen as the first indication that the company’s fleet of cars is searching for them or generally more “rough road sections.”

In order to reduce driver distraction, the update also features a green light chime. This new function might lessen the likelihood that you’ll be honked at by drivers waiting behind you or even help put an end to incidents of road rage.

According to Electrek, the hardware 3.0 computer, also known as the self-driving computer, is a must for the green light feature to operate. The notes also state that “this chime is only designed as a notification,” the notes add. “It is the driver’s responsibility to observe their environment and make decisions accordingly.”
