TESLA’S EXPANSION IN XINJIANG ‘SETS A POOR EXAMPLE’, SAY US LAWMAKERS

Fri 21 January 2022:

Tesla’s growth in Xinjiang, where the Chinese government is reported to have opened detention camps for Uyghurs, has been criticized by US politicians.

The heads of two House of Representatives Ways and Means subcommittees wrote to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, saying the action was “misguided” and set a “poor example” since it “empowers” the Chinese government.

Despite several US and EU sanctions tied to the exploitation of Uyghurs in the region, Tesla stated earlier this year that it would open a showroom in Xinjiang. Tesla has a facility in Shanghai and has experienced rapid growth in the electric vehicle market while also exporting from the country.

The hard-hitting letter comes as the French parliament condemned the “genocide” by the Chinese government on Uyghurs.

At least 1 million Uyghurs are believed to be in internment camps involving forced labour run by the Chinese government. China however denies the claims.

In a letter to Musk, US legislators inquired if Tesla produced items in Xinjiang and had financial ties to Xinjiang-based businesses.

To exert pressure on the Chinese Communist Party, the US government prohibited importation of commodities created in Xinjiang last month.
