Sun 17 April 2022:

Unrest erupted late Saturday in southern Sweden, despite police transferring a protest by an anti-Islam far-right group, which planned to burn a Qur’an among other things, to a new place as a precaution.

After a demonstration planned there by the Danish right-wing party Stram Kurs was moved to the nearby city of Malmo, 45 kilometers (27 miles) south, scuffles and unrest were reported in the southern town of Landskrona.

According to Swedish police, up to 100 people, mostly teenagers, flung stones, lit fire to cars, tires, and trash cans, and erected a traffic-blocking barrier fence. By late Saturday, the scene in Landskrona had calmed down, but it was still tense, according to police, who added that no one had been hurt in the incident.

In the central city of Orebro on Friday evening, violent clashes between demonstrators and counter-protesters erupted ahead of Stram Kurs’ plan to burn a Quran there, injuring 12 police officers and setting four police vehicles on fire.

Burning police cars and demonstrators throwing stones and other objects at police officers in riot gear were shown in video and images from chaotic scenes in Orebro.

Kim Hild, spokesperson for police in southern Sweden, had said earlier on Saturday that police would not revoke permission for the Landskrona demonstration, organised by the Stram Kurs party, because the free-speech threshold for doing that is very high in Sweden.

The right of the protesters “to demonstrate and speak out weighs enormously, heavily and it takes an incredible amount for this to be ignored”, Hild told Swedish news agency TT.

The rally took place in a central park in Malmo on Saturday evening, with Stram Kurs leader Rasmus Paludan speaking to a few dozen participants. Police were forced to use pepper spray to remove a small group of counter-protesters who threw stones at marchers.

Danish right-wing party Stram Kurs leader, Paludan, who has taken to regularly provoking unrest through anti-Islam demonstrations in areas of the Danish capital where large numbers of Muslims live.

Paludan, whose videos on YouTube, eccentric fashion sense and penchant for stunts have long earned him a following among teenagers.

Since Thursday, conflicts have also been reported in Stockholm, Linkoping, and Norrkoping, all of which are sites where Stram Kurs has planned or held demonstrations.
