Tue 06 September 2022:

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has departed Downing Street for the final time before heading to Scotland to formally tender his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II.

The British prime minister, who declared his intention to step down two months ago, is set to meet with Queen Elizabeth II later on Tuesday at her Balmoral estate to begin the transition of power to Liz Truss.

Liz Truss, who was chosen leader of the ruling Conservative Party on Monday, will be anointed prime minister shortly after her own audience with the queen.

Outside No. 10 Downing Street, Johnson said his policies had given the country the economic strength to assist people weather the energy crisis, before concluding with his typical bluster.

“This is it folks,” Boris Johnson said in his final address to the nation as prime minister on Tuesday.

“In only a couple of hours, I will be in Balmoral to see Her Majesty the Queen and the torch will finally be passed to a new Conservative leader,” Johnson said in front of 10 Downing Street, addressing several Tory MPs, civil servants and an army of journalists.

Signaling that he will continue to play an active role in British politics, Johnson said: “Let me say that I am now like one of those booster rockets that has fulfilled its function and I will now be gently re-entering the atmosphere and splashing down invisibly in some remote and obscure corner of the Pacific.”

He vowed to offer the government of incoming Prime Minister Liz Truss “nothing but the most fervent support.”

A day after being chosen as the Conservative Party’s leader by its 172,000 members, Truss, 47, officially assumes her position.

She is scheduled to deliver her inaugural address on Tuesday afternoon before a nation of 67 million people who are concerned about rising energy costs, an impending winter of recession, and labor unrest.

In her Monday speech to Conservative Party members, Truss pledged to “deliver” on the economy, the energy problem, and the overburdened healthcare system.
