Tue 14 July 2026:
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Iran’s top military commanders have been killed and claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his successor, was “90% gone.”
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump said Iran’s military capabilities had been severely degraded.
“They have no navy. They have no air force. It’s all gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone. Their leaders have all been killed,” Trump said.
“Their best leaders have been killed. They’re gone. Khomeini is gone,” he said, using the name of the late Iranian revolutionary leader who died in 1989, while apparently referring to Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. “His son is 90% gone,” he said.
Mojtaba Khamenei is said to be recovering from injuries suffered in the airstrike, and was not present at his father’s funeral ceremonies held this month in Iran and Iraq.
The remarks came as US and Iran exchanged renewed strikes over the weekend, and Trump said the US was “reinstating” a blockade on Iran, and that it will charge ships for safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump notifies Congress of renewed strikes on Iran
The US president has formally notified lawmakers that the Pentagon has resumed strikes against Iran, according to multiple media outlets.
In a letter to Congress on July 10, Trump said the strikes began on July 7 and represent “military action consistent with my responsibility to protect Americans and United States’ interests both at home and abroad”, according to CBS and Politico.
The letter described the most recent strikes as “limited, measured, planned, and executed in a manner designed to minimize civilian casualties”.
Under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, the president must report to Congress within 48 hours of starting any military action. The law also states that any military action begun without Congress’s approval must be terminated within 60 days.
The US began attacking Iran on February 28, and the two sides agreed to a ceasefire in April. But tit-for-tat attacks continued, with the US blockading Iranian ports.
The first 60-day deadline under the War Powers Resolution was on May 1, but Trump did not seek congressional approval, claiming it did not apply because of the ceasefire.
Both houses of Congress have since passed a War Powers Resolution directing Trump to withdraw US forces from hostilities with Iran.
US military confirms blockade of Iranian ports
US Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed its forces will be enforcing the reimposed US blockade, set to begin Thursday at 20:00 GMT.
“CENTCOM forces will enforce the blockade against vessels transiting to or from Iranian ports and coastal areas,” it said in a statement on social media.
“The US military continues to support traffic flow through regional waters for all vessels not violating the blockade.
“The resumption of the U.S. blockade against Iran follows the initial implementation from April 13 to June 18. CENTCOM forces redirected more than 140 compliant vessels, disabled nine non-compliant ships, and allowed over 50 commercial vessels supporting humanitarian aid to pass through the blockade during the two-month period.”
