Mon 21 February 2022:

Truth Social, Donald Trump’s new social media venture, debuted late Sunday in Apple’s App Store, possibly signalling the former president’s return to social media after being banned from multiple platforms last year.
The software went live soon before midnight ET and was automatically downloaded to Apple Inc devices belonging to users who pre-ordered it.
Some users said they were unable to create an account or were placed on a queue with the notice “Due to massive demand, we have placed you on our waitlist.”

According to Reuters, the software has been available to those who have been invited to use it throughout its testing phase.

Following the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, he was banned from Twitter Inc, Facebook Inc, and Alphabet Inc’s YouTube after he was accused of sending messages encouraging violence.

Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the venture behind Truth Social, is led by former Republican US Representative Devin Nunes and joins a growing portfolio of technology companies positioning themselves as champions of free speech in the hopes of attracting users who feel their views are suppressed on more established platforms.

In the last week, Truth Social has welcomed a number of prominent users, including influencers, politicians and celebrities—as well as Americans who were first in line to pre-order the app through the Apple App Store.

So far, the app’s prominent users include Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Dan Bongino, Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk, rapper Kodak Black, country music singer Travis Tritt and more.

So far, none of the emerging startups, such as Twitter competitors Gettr and Parler, as well as video site Rumble, have come close to matching the mainstream counterparts’ popularity.

According to a regulatory filing, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the US Financial Industry Regulatory Authority are investigating Digital World’s activities, and the purchase is still months away from completion.
