Fri 13 May 2022:
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the United Arab Emirates, has died, according to the Emirati national news agency WAM. He was 73.
“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced that there will be 40 days of official mourning with flags at half mast and three days closure of ministries and official entities at the federal and local levels and the private sector,” the agency wrote on Twitter on Friday.
Sheikh Khalifa, who had been battling sickness for years, had long ceased to be involved in day-to-day activities, with his brother, Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, considered the de facto ruler.
There was no immediate word on who will succeed him.
Sheikh Khalifa succeeded his father, the UAE’s founder, Sheikh Zayed, in 2004. He has been rarely seen in official images or at public events in recent years. He had a stroke a decade later, and has remained largely out of the public eye ever since.
