Wed 26 June 2024:

The UK Conservative Party has withdrawn support from two candidates due to an election date betting scandal, according to reports on Tuesday.

A party spokesperson confirmed that Craig Williams and Laura Saunders would no longer receive backing for the general elections on July 4. This decision follows allegations of their involvement in the betting scandal, which is being investigated by both the Gambling Commission and the police.

“As a result of ongoing internal enquiries, we have concluded that we can no longer support Craig Williams or Laura Saunders as Parliamentary Candidates at the forthcoming General Election,” the spokesperson stated.

They added that the party had ensured with the Gambling Commission that their decision would not interfere with the independent investigation.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak mentioned on Monday that the party had been conducting its own internal inquiries and would act promptly based on any findings.

“I was incredibly angry, incredibly angry when I learned about the allegations as everybody would be when they would hear about something like that,” Sunak said during Monday’s election debate.

The scandal has intensified since early June when it was revealed that Craig Williams, Sunak’s closest parliamentary aide, was being investigated for betting £100 ($126) on a July election just days before the prime minister announced the date.
