The video shows a young male on the ground being tased by one officer while another officer is seen kicking and stomping on his head.

A Muslim woman, identified in some social media posts as the young man’s mother, is seen attempting to protect him.

The footage also shows the same officer ordering another male, who was seated on a bench, to get down. As the man complied, the officer kicked him in the knee and then in the head.

It is unknown what sparked the incident.

Greater Manchester Police provided a statement acknowledging four men were arrested at the scene on charges of affray and assaulting emergency service workers.

Regarding the actions captured in the video, Manchester Police stated: “We acknowledge the concerns of the conduct within the video, and our Professional Standards Directorate is assessing this.”

The incident and the police response are currently under review as authorities address the public’s concerns over the officers’ conduct.

This incident comes shortly after a scathing report revealed serious misconduct within Greater Manchester Police, including unlawful arrests and strip searches of women. The review, commissioned by Mayor Andy Burnham, highlighted severe treatment issues within the force.

In a statement, Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry said: “We know that a film of an incident at Manchester Airport that is circulating widely shows an event that is truly shocking, and that people are rightly extremely concerned about.

“The use of such force in an arrest is an unusual occurrence and one that we understand creates alarm.

“One male officer has been removed from operational duties and we are making a voluntary referral of our policing response to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.”

The IOPC said it would assess GMP’s referral “and decide what further action is required”.

Andy George, president of the National Black Police Association, described the video as “difficult to watch”.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he wrote: “Whilst policing is a really difficult job, we are trained to a higher standard and held to a higher standard.”

Home Office minister Dame Diana Johnson also posted on X: “I am aware of disturbing footage from an incident at Manchester Airport this afternoon and understand the public concern it has prompted.

“I have asked for a full update from Greater Manchester Police.”

Widespread condemnation

The video has drawn widespread condemnation and raises serious questions about police conduct and accountability.

Social media users have called for an investigation by GM mayor Andy Burnham and the Independent Office for Police Conduct into the incident.

One of the users wrote, “What the hell am I watching?! Police brutality in full force as officer kicks and stamps on head at Manchester airport.”

“Absolutely unnecessary force and unacceptable. This officer must face consequences @gmpolice Does anyone know the family?,” another person wrote online.

“This policeman should be off the street and put into a jail for brutally assaulting/ attacking an unarmed person lying on ground face down and posing no threat whatsoever!,” wrote another user online simiarly in response to the incident.
