Thu 08 August 2024:
Russian troops are embroiled in fierce clashes with Ukrainian forces for a third consecutive day, following a brazen incursion into the Kursk region that has rattled Moscow and raised alarms over the security of the world’s largest nuclear power.
In a dramatic escalation of the two-year conflict, approximately 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers breached the Russian border in the early hours of August 6, employing tanks and armored vehicles, while aerial support from swarms of drones and heavy artillery provided crucial backup, according to Russian officials.
Significant combat activity has been reported around the town of Sudzha, a key point for Russian natural gas flows into Ukraine, prompting fears of potential disruptions to energy supplies bound for Europe.

The unexpected offensive caught Russia off guard, nearly two-and-a-half years after President Vladimir Putin initiated military operations in Ukraine in February 2022.
President Putin denounced the Ukrainian maneuver as a “major provocation,” while Sergei Mironov, leader of a pro-Kremlin political party, described it as a “terrorist attack” and an unlawful invasion of “internationally recognised foreign territory.”
In response to the escalating situation, Kursk’s acting governor, Alexei Smirnov, announced the evacuation of thousands of residents from the war-torn area.
The White House, Ukraine’s chief ally, stated it had no foreknowledge of the assault and would seek additional information from Kyiv regarding the unfolding situation.
“Units of the Northern group of forces, together with the FSB of Russia, continue to destroy armed formations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Sudzhensky and Korenevsky districts of the Kursk region, directly adjacent to the Russian-Ukrainian border,” the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed.
While the Ukrainian military has remained tight-lipped about the Kursk operation, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy commended his army’s capability “to surprise” and achieve results, avoiding a direct mention of the ongoing offensive.
Russia’s defense ministry asserted on Thursday that their forces, alongside the FSB, had managed to stem the Ukrainian advance and were actively engaged in combat in the region.
The strategic implications of Ukraine’s latest move are still being assessed, particularly as it aims to contain Russian forces that currently occupy 18% of Ukrainian territory.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev characterized the Ukrainian assault as a strategic maneuver designed to prompt Russia into reallocating resources from the frontline and demonstrate to Western allies that Ukraine remains a formidable adversary.
In light of the Kursk attack, Medvedev proposed that Russia should revise its military objectives to encompass the entirety of Ukraine.
“From this moment on, the SVO (Special Military Operation) should acquire an openly extraterritorial character,” he stated, urging Russian forces to advance toward key cities such as Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Mykolayiv, and Kyiv.
“We will stop only when we consider it acceptable and profitable for ourselves.”
