UKRAINIAN FORCES LOST CONTROL OF SEVERODONETSK VILLAGE

Mon 20 June 2022:

Ukraine announced Monday that it has lost control of a village near Severodonetsk, the eastern industrial city at the center of weeks of brutal battle with invading Russian soldiers.

“Unfortunately, we do not control Metyolkine anymore. And the enemy continues to build up its reserves,” the Lugansk regional governor Sergiy Gaiday said in a statement on social media.

The hamlet, which had a pre-war population of roughly 1,000 people, was the latest Russian victory surrounding Severodonetsk, where Moscow’s force has met against strong Ukrainian resistance.

After being pushed out of areas around the capital at the start of their invasion in February, Russian troops have progressively progressed in the eastern Donbas region, where they have focused their offensive efforts.

Gaiday said that the Azot chemical plant in Severodonetsk, where hundreds of civilians are said to be sheltering, was being shelled by Russian forces “constantly”.
