UN RIGHTS EXPERT CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AMID PROGRESS IN TATE BROTHERS EXTRADITION CASE

On Wednesday, a United Nations human rights expert welcomed efforts to extradite Andrew Tate — the influencer known for promoting aggressive masculinity to millions of online followers — stressing that his fame should not protect him from prosecution.

Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, said proceedings against Tate and his brother Tristan marked a significant step toward holding them accountable for what she described as serious allegations of violence against women and girls.

The brothers are currently in US custody as Britain seeks their extradition on new charges of rape, sex trafficking and assault.

Long-delayed reckoning, rapporteur says

Alsalem said the case represented a turning point after years in which women’s allegations against the Tates were not taken seriously.

“After years of law enforcement and prosecutorial authorities ignoring and dismissing the testimonies and experiences of women who came forward with credible allegations against the Tate brothers, these recent proceedings offer renewed hope that justice may finally be achieved,” she said.

She added that the scope of the allegations, combined with the brothers’ reach, made the case especially pressing.

“Given in particular the scale of the alleged offences, and the Tate brothers’ global influence in promoting misogyny and harmful models of masculinity, it is urgent and imperative that they face justice,” Alsalem said.

As a UN special rapporteur, Alsalem is an independent expert appointed by the Human Rights Council to investigate and report on issues within her mandate. Special rapporteurs do not speak on behalf of the United Nations as an institution.

A prominent figure in online ‘manosphere’

Andrew Tate has built a large following as one of the most visible figures associated with the “manosphere,” a loose network of largely online communities centered on traditional masculinity, anti-feminist rhetoric and self-improvement content.

He promotes these views, often laced with overtly misogynistic messaging, to a large social media audience, including 10.8 million followers on X.

Andrew and Tristan Tate face 59 charges between them, 42 against Andrew and 17 against Tristan, though the specific nature of each charge was not detailed.

The brothers were detained by US authorities in Miami last month, a move their lawyer characterized as “politically motivated.” They are contesting extradition, with their legal team maintaining their innocence.
