Mon 08 November 2021:

Austria has taken new efforts to tackle the rising number of coronavirus illnesses by focusing on those who have not been vaccinated.

Only those who have been vaccinated or who have recovered from COVID-19 are permitted to eat in restaurants, attend sporting events, or use ski lifts in the country as of Monday.

The restriction applies to hotels as well as services such as hair salons.

“We believe that this can make a strong contribution to curbing what is happening,” Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler said on Austrian television on Sunday.

He added that regional authorities could introduce even tougher measures if they felt they were necessary, including local lockdowns “as a last resort.”

More than a quarter of Austrians aged 12 and up still lack a vaccination certificate, which has been recognized as one of the primary causes of the sharp increase in cases and hospital admissions.

In Austria, the seven-day incidence is now 599.6 per 100,000 people. The incidence has already surpassed the 900 mark in Upper Austria and the Salzburg region, the two federal states with the lowest vaccine uptake rate.
