The US is trying to make essential preparations for large-scale refugee and migrant crises that could occur as a result of the escalation of the situation in Ukraine, according to US broadcaster Fox news reported Sunday, citing a source familiar with the matter.

According to the source, European governments are also exploring prospective housing and migration flows for displaced Ukrainians who will presumably flee to other European regions.

According to Fox News, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley held a closed-door briefing with unnamed lawmakers, informing them that if Russia launched a military operation against Ukraine, Kiev would fall within 72 hours, and the invasion would likely result in 15,000 Ukrainian troops and 4,000 Russian troops getting killed.

Some US lawmakers were concerned by the fact that Washington did not provide Kiev with timely and significant military assistance, such as anti-aircraft and rocket launcher systems. However, the Biden administration officials, also present at the briefing, responded by saying that military aid of such a caliber could be seen as a reason to attack Ukraine, Fox News reported.

While Ukraine is receiving security assistance from the United States through a $200 million allocation made in December, it is also receiving $600 million in assistance from the United Kingdom and Baltic states, which the country is depending heavily upon and includes anti-tank Javelin missiles and older-version Stinger portable anti-aircraft missiles.
