Thu 30 April 2026:
US Central Command has requested to deploy Dark Eagle hypersonic missile system in Middle East for “possible use against Iran,” Bloomberg reported on Thursday citing sources.
If approved, the request would mark the first time Washington deploys the system, which has not yet been declared fully operational.
The report said the request cited Iran’s relocation of launchers beyond the range of the Precision Strike Missile, a weapon capable of striking targets at more than 300 miles (483 kilometers).
According to the report, no decision has yet been made on the request and the proposal has not been publicly disclosed.
A tenuous ceasefire between the US and Iran has been in place since April 9, but the report suggests the request could signal preparations for additional strikes if President Donald Trump decides to proceed.
Dark Eagle, also known as the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW), is believed to have a range exceeding 1,725 miles (2,776 kilometers), though its full capabilities remain classified.
The system is designed to travel at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound and can adjust its trajectory mid-flight to evade interception.

Iran can likely withstand US pressure campaign for ‘at least two or three months, if not longer’
Mohamad Elmasry, a professor of media studies at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, says Trump’s calculations in the war on Iran – including his call for Tehran to “cry uncle” – are “based on a fundamental misreading of Iran’s calculus”.
It is Iran, he told Al Jazeera, that feels as though it holds leverage and can play the long game.
He argued that Washington’s belief that its blockade will push Iran into an oil storage crisis is “greatly exaggerated”.
“It’s much more likely that Iran will continue to come up with new creative ways and workarounds and that it can probably hold out for at least two or three months, if not longer,” Elmasry said, pointing to a recent Iranian report, based on satellite tracking data, that said some 52 ships had bypassed the US blockade within 72 hours.
“And then the question is not can Iran hold out? The question is what kind of cost is the United States willing to endure? Because two or three more months would be catastrophic for the American economy and the global economy.”
Elmasry added that Iran was willing to absorb severe economic pain because it sees the war as an existential crisis.
“The Iranians are willing to incur an economic cost because this is a fight for their survival,” he said. “If they were to agree to Trump’s terms, today or tomorrow, that could mean, from their perspective, the end of the Islamic Republic.”
