The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on abortion was applauded on Friday by the Vatican’s Academy for Life, saying it challenged the whole world to reflect on life issues.
The Vatican department also said in a statement that the defense of human life could not be confined to individual rights because life is a matter of “broad social significance.”
The U.S. Supreme Court took the dramatic step Friday of overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that recognized a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion and legalized it nationwide.
“The fact that a large country with a long democratic tradition has changed its position on this issue also challenges the whole world,” the Academy said in a statement.
Lifelong Catholic U.S. President Joe Biden denounced the decision, calling it a “sad day” for the country and characterizing the court’s conservatives as “extreme.”
“The health and life of women of our nation are now at risk,” Biden said. “Make no mistake. This decision is the culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to upset the balance of our law.”
Biden emphasized that this is the first time the court has revoked a constitutional right, calling it a “sad day for the court and for the country.”
“Voters need to make their voices heard,” Biden said, calling on them to elect candidates that will restore the right to an abortion at the congressional and local level. “This fall Roe is on the ballot. Personal freedoms are on the ballot. The right to privacy, liberty, equality, they’re all on the ballot.”
The Pontifical Academy for Life’s president, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, stated that the Court’s ruling was a “powerful invitation to reflect” on the matter at a time when “Western society is losing passion for life.
“By choosing life, our responsibility for the future of humanity is at stake,” Paglia said.
