Thu 09 July 2026:

Goshamahal MLA and former BJP leader Raja Singh’s speeches have sparked protests, arrests and national headlines. But when these cases reach court, many end in acquittal. In this episode, Pooja Prasanna examines why.

The findings reveal recurring failures in investigation and prosecution, including missing electronic evidence, lack of mandatory sanctions and weak case preparation.

This is not just the story of one politician. It is also a story about how India’s criminal justice system handles hate speech prosecutions.

T. Raja Singh is a controversial Indian politician and a member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly for the Goshamahal constituency in Hyderabad. Formerly with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he has a long, highly documented history of making inflammatory remarks and delivering hate speech targeting the Muslim community.

Raja Singh is known for his hardline religious rhetoric and has frequently been booked by the police, accumulating over 100 criminal cases over the years. Some of his most prominent controversies include:
    • Anti-Prophet Remarks: In August 2022, he posted a YouTube video containing derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad. This triggered massive protests across Hyderabad, leading to his arrest and subsequent suspension from the BJP.
    • Hate Speeches: He has repeatedly been accused of delivering provocative speeches at events across India (including in Maharashtra), calling for violence and boycotts against the Muslim community.
    • Social Media Bans: Due to his persistent anti-Muslim rhetoric, Facebook and Instagram previously banned him from their platforms under their “dangerous individuals and organizations” policy.

Legal Status
Despite being charged multiple times with promoting enmity between religious groups, many of the specific hate speech cases against him have collapsed in court, often resulting in acquittals due to procedural lapses or lack of evidence. For example, in June 2026, a special court in Hyderabad acquitted him in the prominent 2022 case regarding his remarks about Prophet Muhammad.
