Fri 31 March 2023:

A New York grand jury indicted former US President Donald Trump for the hush money payments he made to an adult star during his 2016 campaign. Trump was the first former US President to be charged with a crime.

What’s Next For Donald Trump:

  1. Donald Trump’s lawyer had previously said that if he was indicted then his team would “follow normal procedures”. It is expected that the former President would likely surrender.
  2. According to a report, Donald Trump Trump would have his fingerprints and mug shot taken as part of the protocols followed for a felony arrest in New York. Defendants are typically detained for several hours until all procedures are completed.
  3. In view of the high-profile case and the security ramifications it entails, Secret Service and the New York Police Department will be on high alert keeping potentially violent protests in mind.
  4. Donald Trump, who has retained his Secret Service detail by virtue of being a former US President, will have his agents by his side at all times. Given the unprecedented nature of the case, defence lawyers believe it is unlikely that he will be paraded into a courtroom with handcuffs.
  5. According to New York state law, falsifying business records in a campaign-finance violation is a “low-level felony” which is punishable by up to four years in prison. US law allows a person under indictment or in prison to run for the oval office and even serve as President.

“Political Persecution, Witch-Hunt”

Trump on Thursday slammed the decision to indict him over hush money payments made to a porn star, raging against prosecutors and his political opponents.

“This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history,” he said in a statement.

“Even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats — the enemy of the hard-working men and women of this Country — have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt,” he said.

In a five-paragraph statement released within minutes of the indictment news breaking, Trump vowed to take revenge as he plots to return to the White House in the 2024 election.

“The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to ‘Get Trump,’ but now they’ve done the unthinkable — indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant Election Interference,” he said.

“Weaponizing our justice system to punish a political opponent, who just so happens to be a President of the United States and by far the leading Republican candidate for President, has never happened before. Ever.

“I believe this Witch-Hunt will backfire massively on Joe Biden,” he said.
