WHO LISTS 3 MISLEADING FACTS LEADING TO OMICRON SURGE

Coronavirus (COVID-19) News Desk World

Sun 20 March 2022:

In light of the recent spike in coronavirus cases in South Korea, China, and Europe, the World Health Organization (WHO) has compiled a list of common misunderstandings. This alert was issued after the number of new cases worldwide increased by 8% last week compared to the previous week.

According to Maria Van Kerkhove of the World Health Organization, there is a lot of misinformation about the virus spreading. It claims that Omicron infection is minor. Furthermore, many people believe the COVID pandemic is over. Apart from that, there is a lot of confusion because many people believe this is the final variety we will have to cope with. All of this, however, is not correct!

WHO’s COVID-19 Technical Lead Maria Van Kerkhove pointed out earlier this week that there is a lot of misinformation out there.

“We have huge amounts of misinformation that’s out there. The misinformation that Omicron is mild. Misinformation that the pandemic is over. Misinformation that this is the last variant that we will have to deal with. This is really causing a lot of confusion,” Kerkhove said.

Meanwhile, noting that the virus has not ‘settled down’ into a purely seasonal or predictable pattern yet, WHO’s Mike Ryan, “it’s moving around easily and in the context of waning immunity and vaccines not acting perfectly against infection, the virus will likely continue to echo around the world.”

“This is how viruses work. They establish themselves in a community, and they will move quickly to the next community that’s unprotected.”

Speaking about the surge of cases, WHO in its weekly report stated that more than 11 million new COVID-19 infections have come up last week and 43,000 new deaths have taken place. The biggest increase was observed in the Western Pacific (29%) and Africa (12%). Also in Europe, the increase in the cases was recorded by 2 per cent.

Meanwhile, 2 COVID deaths were reported in China on Saturday which were the first since January 2021.
