Thu 25 August 2022:

The World Health Organization stated on Thursday that there have been more than 41,000 cases of monkeypox worldwide and 12 fatalities, with most cases occurring in the United States, Reuters reported.

The outbreak was deemed a global health emergency by the WHO in July.

According to the WHO’s most recent epidemiological report, the number of cases recorded globally decreased by 21% in the week ending August 21 following a month-long pattern of rising infections.

“There are signs the outbreak is slowing in Europe, where a combination of effective public health measures, behavior change and vaccination is helping to prevent transmission,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press briefing.

Still, more than a dozen countries saw a rise in weekly case numbers with the highest increase reported in the United States. Over 34% of the current global case count is in the United States.

According to the WHO, infections in the Americas “a continuing steep rise” over the previous week.
