Thu 25 November 2021:

Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, and his partner Stella Moris have registered their intention to marry in the Belmarsh prison in London, where he is awaiting a legal decision on extradition requested by the United States.

“Julian and I have officially given notice of our intention to marry! We’re excited that we are finally able to get married… But Julian should not be in prison in the first place. This is a travesty. Julian must be freed,” Stella Moris tweeted.

The date of the ceremony is still unknown because it is dependent on the authorities, she said after visiting Assange in jail on Wednesday.

The couple has been together for five years and has two children. After filing a lawsuit against Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab and the Belmarsh prison governor for obstructing their marriage, they were allowed to marry in jail in mid-November.

On April 11, 2019, Assange was arrested in London and sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for breaching bail in 2012. He sought refuge at the Ecuadorean embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced sexual assault charges that were later dropped by a Swedish court.

The US is seeking Assange on espionage charges after Wikileaks published thousands of classified documents revealing war crimes committed by American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. If the whistleblower is tried and convicted in the United States, he faces up to 175 years in prison.
