Thu 11 November 2021:
Greta Thunberg, a teen Swedish climate activist, has urged UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to designate the climate problem a level three global emergency, the highest level on the UN scale, to match the response to the COVID-19 epidemic.
“We are filing a legal petition to the UN secretary-general urging him to declare the climate crisis a global level 3 emergency – the UN’s highest category,” she wrote on Twitter.
The group of 14 also includes Ranton Anjain and Litokne Kabua from the Marshall Islands, Ridhima Pandey from India, Alexandria Villaseor from the United States, and Ayakha Melithafa from South Africa, who declared Cop26 “a failure” and a “greenwash festival” while speaking to protesters in Glasgow on Friday.
They hope that an emergency declaration would result in resources and technical expertise being rushed to countries most at risk from global heating, particularly small island states and developing countries, to support climate change adaptation, analysis of climate science and public health responses.
As quoted by the Guardian, the UN has already seen the draft and level three emergency is currently under discussion, though no official confirmation has been issued yet, the newspaper added.
