Tue 07 September 2021:

According to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, there have been 2,141 deaths in Nigeria as a result of the cholera outbreak since January, with more than 65,000 probable cases (NCDC).

According to the latest cholera outbreak update on Tuesday, a total of 65,145 suspected cholera cases had been reported as of Thursday from 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with 2,141 deaths, marking a case fatality rate of 3.3 percent.

According to the update, the number of new suspected cases in the week of August 23 to August 29 decreased to 2,127 from 3,098 the previous week.

“The national multi-sectoral EOC (Emergency Operations Center) activated at level two continues to coordinate the national response,” said the update, adding the NCDC has supported the affected states through deployment of rapid response teams, deployment of cholera rapid diagnostic kits, etc.

Cholera is a highly virulent disease characterized by a sudden onset of acute watery diarrhea that can lead to death in its most severe form.

The cholera outbreak in Nigeria has remained year after year, primarily during the rainy season and more frequently in regions with inadequate sanitation, overcrowding, a shortage of clean water and food, and open defecation.
