ZELENSKIY SACKS TOP FOREIGN ENVOYS INCLUDING KYIV’S AMBASSADOR TO GERMANY

Sat 09 July 2022:

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed a number of high-ranking foreign envoys, including Kyiv’s ambassador to Germany, according to the presidential website, Reuters reported.

He announced the removal of Ukraine’s ambassadors to Germany, India, the Czech Republic, Norway, and Hungary in a decree that provided no explanation for the action.

It was unclear at first if the envoys would receive new positions.

As Ukraine seeks to repel Russia’s invasion on February 24, Zelenskiy has asked his diplomats to mobilize international backing and military assistance for Ukraine.

Kyiv’s relations with Germany, which is heavily reliant on Russian energy supplies and also Europe’s biggest economy, has been a particular sensitive matter.

The two capitals are currently at odds over a German-made turbine undergoing maintenance in Canada. Germany wants Ottawa to return the turbine to Russian natural gas giant Gazprom to pump gas to Europe.

Ukraine has urged Canada to withhold the turbine since sending it to Russia would be against the sanctions put in place against Moscow, according to Kyiv.
