SUDAN: DEATH TOLL RISES TO 11 SINCE MILITARY COUP

Africa World

Sun 31 October 2021:

According to a local doctors committee, a Sudanese activist died of his wounds on Sunday, bringing the total number of people killed in rallies against the military takeover this week to 11.

Three demonstrators were killed by army fire during Saturday’s anti-military takeover protests, according to the independent Central Doctors Committee.

“The fatalities took the death toll among revolutionaries to 11 since Oct. 25,” the committee said in a statement.

There was no immediate comments from the country’s military rulers on the statement.

Sudan’s ruling military council declared a state of emergency and disbanded the transitional sovereign council and government on October 25, just hours after detaining Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and his civilian government ministers. Some sections of the constitutional document defining Sudan’s political transition were also suspended.

Following a failed military coup last month, tensions between the military and the civilian administration have been rising.
