1,000-YEAR-OLD PRE-INCA MUMMY FOUND IN PERU

Peruvian archaeologists discovered the mummified remains of an adult individual belonging to the pre-Inca Ychsma culture, buried in a shallow burial chamber in a residential neighborhood in the Miraflores district of Lima.

The Ychsma culture formed around 1100 AD. after the disintegration of the Wari or Huari culture, a civilization that flourished in the central Andes until around 1450, when the Incas arrived.

“It is an adult individual sitting with his legs bent,” said this Wednesday the head of the team of archaeologists, Mirella Ganoza, quoted by Reuters.

The remains, along with ceramic vessels, textile fragments and laminated objects, were found in Huaca Pucllana, one of the 400 huecas, or sites with archaeological ruins, located in several urban neighborhoods.

Experts see the site, where several finds have already been recorded, as an inexhaustible box that can still house many relics.
