21 KILLED IN MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH IN SOUTH AFRICA

Mon 14 September 2026:

At least 21 people were killed and four others seriously injured in an accident involving multiple vehicles in South Africa’s Western Cape province, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Monday.

The agency said the crash took place on Sunday night at 11.30 pm local time (0930 GMT) on the N1 highway, involving two minibus vehicles and a station wagon.

The collision on N1 between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamku led to the closure of the highway in both directions, with motorists urged to take alternative routes, expect delays and exercise extreme caution.

South Africans depend on minibus taxis as their main mode of transport. The 14-seat taxis transport millions of people to work, schools, provinces, towns, and even across the borders daily.

Western Cape MEC of Mobility Isaac Sileku is expected to visit the crash site to assess the situation and receive an update from traffic officials and emergency medical personnel.

Sileku described the crash as a devastating loss of life.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in this tragic collision. Our traffic and emergency response teams are working tirelessly at the scene under challenging conditions. Because of the seriousness of the crash, the road will remain closed for some time,” Sileku said.

Western Cape MEC of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the focus is also on those who have been injured and the teams caring for them.

“We are devastated by the loss of multiple lives following this serious collision on the N1. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones who have lost someone in this tragedy. No words can ease the pain of such a sudden and devastating loss, and we hold them in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

12 000 deaths on South Africa’s roads annually

Earlier this month, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy told the Road Safety Practitioners’ Colloquium that South Africa cannot treat nearly 12 000 road deaths a year as normal. That is why the country has committed to cutting annual road fatalities by half by 2030, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

We have recorded significant milestones over the past two years. over six percent less annual crashes and fatalities were recorded in 2025 compared to 2024.

Data from the 2025-2026 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign indicated a five percent reduction in both road fatalities and crashes, and five provinces recorded a reduction in the number of fatalities when compared to the same period in the previous year.

During the 2026 Easter long weekend the Road Traffic Management Corporation recorded the second-lowest crashes & fatalities over the past 4-year Easter periods. When Compared to the peak in 2024, crashes declined by 24% and fatalities by 39%.

While these statistics are commendable, the numbers remain too high, and every life lost represents the loss of a loved one, a parent and a breadwinner. We therefore need to ramp up and intensify our existing efforts to continue seeing a reduction in these figures.
