AUGUST 2026 BECOMES HOTTEST AUGUST ON RECORD AS EL NIÑO DRIVES OCEAN HEAT

Mon 14 September 2026:

Record global temperatures raise concerns over food prices, energy demand and wider economic disruption

August 2026 was the hottest August recorded globally since observations began in 1850, with record ocean temperatures and persistent El Niño conditions contributing to the unprecedented heat, according to a new report from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NOAA said August surpassed the previous joint records set in 2023 and 2024 by 0.08°C, with global surface temperatures averaging 1.32°C above the 20th-century average.

The month also marked the 48th consecutive August in which global temperatures exceeded the 20th-century norm. All 10 of the warmest Augusts on record have occurred since 2016, highlighting the persistence of global warming.

The June-to-August period was likewise the hottest three-month meteorological season ever recorded worldwide. NOAA said the Northern Hemisphere experienced its warmest summer on record, while the Southern Hemisphere recorded a winter that was close to a record high.

El Niño Fuels Record Ocean Temperatures

Global sea surface temperatures reached their highest level on record, with persistent El Niño conditions across the central and eastern tropical Pacific contributing to the exceptional ocean heat.

El Niño is a recurring climate pattern that can alter rainfall, temperatures and weather patterns around the world. Its effects can include drought in some regions and heavier rainfall or flooding in others, creating significant risks for agriculture, infrastructure and economies.

Land temperatures were also close to record levels, while sea ice coverage remained below average in both the Arctic and Antarctic.

Economic Impact Could Spread Across Global Markets

The combination of El Niño and record temperatures can have significant economic consequences. Hotter and drier conditions can reduce crop yields, damage livestock and increase irrigation requirements, potentially pushing up food prices and increasing pressure on household budgets.

Agricultural economies are particularly vulnerable because disruptions to crops such as grains, coffee, cocoa and other commodities can affect both farmers and global supply chains. Lower production in major growing regions can also increase food-import costs for countries that rely heavily on international markets.

Extreme heat can simultaneously raise electricity demand as households and businesses use more air conditioning and cooling systems. This can increase pressure on power grids and raise energy costs, particularly when heat coincides with disruptions to energy production or transportation.

El Niño-related droughts and floods can also damage roads, ports, power infrastructure and industrial facilities, increasing repair costs and disrupting trade. Insurers and governments may face higher losses from climate-related disasters, while businesses can experience reduced productivity when extreme heat limits outdoor and industrial work.

US Records Its Hottest Summer

The contiguous United States also experienced its warmest summer in a 132-year record, surpassing previous highs recorded in 1936 and 2021 by 0.22°C.

August temperatures across the lower 48 states averaged 24.2°C, making it the hottest August recorded nationally since records began in 1895.

Daytime maximum temperatures averaged an unprecedented 31.4°C, adding to concerns about heat-related health risks, agricultural stress, higher cooling demand and increased economic costs.

The latest figures underscore how increasingly persistent extreme heat, combined with climate patterns such as El Niño, can affect not only weather conditions but also food supplies, energy markets, infrastructure and economic activity worldwide.
