Middle East World

Wed 22 January 2025:

Some 92 per cent of homes in the Gaza Strip, or about 436,000 homes, were destroyed or damaged as a result of the Israeli aggression on the enclave, while 90 per cent of citizens were displaced, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said yesterday.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) representative in Palestine, Dr Rik Peeperkorn, said: “The ceasefire in Gaza brings hope, but immense challenges lie ahead.”

“Addressing the massive needs and restoring the health system will be an extremely complex and challenging task, given the scale of destruction, operational complexity and constraints involved.”

Since the Israeli aggression on Gaza on 7 October 2023, the Israeli bombing of the besieged Strip has caused an “unprecedented amount of destruction in modern history,” according to a UN report.

According to UN estimates, the total cost of rebuilding what was destroyed by the war amounts to $40 billion, with approximately 37 million tonnes of rubble in the Strip and more than 70 per cent of the total housing in Gaza damaged or destroyed.

The UN confirmed that the destruction in the Palestinian Strip is enormous and frightening, and that the education and health sectors have been almost completely destroyed.

According to the latest damage assessment conducted by the UN Satellite Centre (UNOSAT), as of 1 December 2024, approximately 69 per cent of the buildings in the Strip have been damaged or destroyed, a total of 170,812 buildings.

Based on satellite analysis, American researchers Corey Scher and Jamon Van Den Hoek, counted 172,015 damaged or destroyed buildings in Gaza on 11 January, which is equivalent to 59.8 per cent of the buildings in the Strip.

Combining data from UNOSAT and geographic database OpenStreetMap indicates that more than 83 per cent of Gaza’s mosques have been damaged or destroyed.

Gaza’s schools, which have been used since the beginning of the war as shelters for the displaced, including UN schools, have also paid a heavy price in the war.
