Sun 12 December 2021:

According to the Kyodo news agency, an avian flu outbreak has been reported in the northern Japanese prefecture of Aomori, with 7,000 birds slated for extinction.

A poultry farm confirmed finding several dead birds on Friday, according to prefecture officials. The presence of the highly pathogenic H5 strain was discovered through genetic analysis.

Transporting chickens and eggs within a three-kilometer (1.8-mile) radius of the farm, as well as exporting chickens and eggs outside of a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) radius, is now prohibited.

This season, Aomori has become the eighth Japanese prefecture to report a confirmed bird flu outbreak.

The avian influenza outbreak in Japan from fall 2020 to spring 2021 was the country’s largest ever. More than a third of prefectures were affected by the virus, and more than 50 farms had to cull about 10 million chickens.
