Tue 09 March 2021:
British singer-songwriter Adele has been named the UK’s best-selling artist of the 21st century, a British music industry association said Monday.
The Londoner is the U.K.’s best-selling female artist since the year 2000, according to a report published this week by the Official Charts Company, ahead of Pink and Madonna, respectively.
“Between them the Top Ten artists have sold in excess of 72 million albums (including streamed album equivalents), with three of the artists British – Adele, Dido and Amy Winehouse,” the association added.
American artists dominate the list with five (Pink, Madonna, Beyonce, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga), while Brits account for three of the leading ladies (Adele, Dido and Amy Winehouse). Barbadian Rihanna (at No. 4) and Melbourne born-and-bred artist Kylie Minogue (No. 7) also make the list.
London-born Adele entered the music business in 2007, and 10 years later she swept the Grammy Awards, bagging five honors, including the coveted Record of the Year for Hello and Album of the Year for 25.
Her many hits include Hello, Someone Like You, and Skyfall.
Adele doubles up as her 2011 album 21 crowns the list of U.K.’s best-selling albums by women artists from 2000 until now. A monster CD seller, 21 has shifted just shy of six million combined copies in the U.K.
The “Hello” singer’s other albums 25 and 19 also appear, at No. 3 and No. 9, respectively.
On her most recent album, 25, released in 2015, she said: “25 is about getting to know who I’ve become without realizing. And I’m sorry it took so long, but you know, life happened.”
