Tue 06 September 2022:

Apple Watch’s ECG heart sensor has once again saved a man’s life by sending him alerts for a low resting heart rate on almost 3,000 occasions.

After his heart stopped an incredible 138 times over a 48-hour testing period at the hospital, David Last, 54, from the UK, hailed Apple Watch with saving his life, according to the Independent.

It was discovered that his heart’s resting rate had fallen to just 30 beats per minute (it is normally between 60-100bpm).

His cardiologist informed him that he had a significant cardiac blockage following testing like a 48-hour ECG and an MRI.

Over the course of a 48-hour ECG, his heart stopped 138 times at 10-second intervals.

Last was operated this month, and a pacemaker was installed to detect abnormal heart rhythms.

David Last, 54, received the watch as a birthday gift from his wife Sarah in April. The watch immediately showed that his resting heart rate was as low as 30bpm. The usual number in men of his age is around 100bpm.

“If she hadn’t bought me my Apple watch for my birthday, I wouldn’t be here. I will always be eternally grateful to her for it. Apart from charging it, it’s always staying on me now,” he was quoted as saying.

David initially ignored the device as being faulty but decided to visit a doctor at his wife’s suggestion.

Major study suggests Apple Watch can detect irregular heartbeat

He was referred to a cardiologist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where he was booked in for an MRI scan in May.
When the results of the scan came, doctors told him that he was at risk of sudden cardiac death.
“The hospital sounded really panicky on the phone, as soon as I got there, they had a bed ready immediately,” David was quoted as saying by Mirror.
He said, “The pre-surgery consultation explained that my case was unusual, and they had extensive meetings about what they were going to do. They explained that I had something called ‘heart block’.
David explained, “The junction box in my heart had stopped working and failed to pass on electrical pulses. My heart had stopped 138 times in 10-second intervals over a 48-hour period.”
This mainly happened when he was asleep, causing another part of his heart to kickstart the blood flow before the process would repeat.
David said that he and his family have never had any history of heart complications. He had no symptoms of heart problems and doctors were amazed to find out how active he is.
“My wife keeps saying that she saved my life, and she’s not wrong. If she hadn’t bought me my Apple watch for my birthday, I wouldn’t be here. I will always be eternally grateful to her for it. Apart from charging it, it’s always staying on me now. It’s incredible it can monitor your heart rate and alert you if there is a problem,” he said.

The Apple Watch has saved several lives in the past across the world.

With iOS 16 and watchOS 9 this fall, Apple Watch and iPhone will offer features that focus on 17 areas of health and fitness, from heart health to sleep, women’s health, mobility and more, according to the tech giant.

Apple recently collaborated with Stanford University in the US to build the Apple Heart Study, which was a first of its kind in the medical community and the largest virtual cardiac clinical study during its time.
