Archaeologists from Saudi Arabia have discovered a lost kingdom in the highlands of Al-Ula, near the northwest corner of the Saudi Arabia.

A team of French and Saudi archaeologists are now excavating five sites belonging to the Dadan and Lihyan civilizations. These civilizations flourished in this region about 2000 years ago. It is not yet known what caused the extinction of these civilizations.

Abdulrahman Al-Sohaibani, co-director of the Dadan Archaeological Mission, said that this is a project that could really unlock the mysteries of these civilizations.

The Royal Commission associated with the project reported that Dadan is mentioned in the Old Testament, while Lihyan was the largest empire of its time. Its borders extended from Medina in the south to Aqaba in modern Jordan in the north.

The two kingdoms controlled an important trade route for about 900 years until 100 AD. But, very little information about these two states is public.

Previous excavations had been limited to the main sanctuary area, said Jerome Rohmer, a researcher with the French National Center for Scientific Research.

“We would just like have a comprehensive overview of the chronology of the site, the layout of the site, its material culture, its economy,” Rohmer added.

“It’s a comprehensive project where we’re basically trying to answer all of these questions.”
