Sat 10 July 2021:

A suicide car bomb targeting a government convoy exploded at a busy junction in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, killing at least nine people and injuring eight others, a health official said.

The suicide bomber targeted a motorcade escorting the Mogadishu police chief Farhan Mohamud Qaroleh who managed to survive the attack.

“I survived the explosion of a car that was targeted by mercenaries. The Al-Shabab militants are not only my enemies, but of all the [Somali] people,” Qaroleh said on Facebook.

It was the second such large explosion in the city this month. A blast targeting a teashop killed at least 10 people last week.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, military operations spokesperson for the al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabaab, told Reuters it was responsible for Saturday’s attack. The group, which wants to overthrow the government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law, frequently carries out such bombings.

Al-Shabaab, which is linked to al-Qaida, has been fighting to overthrow Somalia’s federal government since 2007 and launches frequent attacks against the security forces as well as government and civilian targets.
