Mon 30 May 2022:

Last year, German police saw a huge increase in depictions of sexual abuse against children compared to the previous year, according to the country’s top criminal police official.

According to a special assessment of police crime figures presented to reporters in Berlin, more than 39,000 cases — an increase of 108.8% — came to the notice of authorities last year. Distribution, acquisition, possession, and production of depictions of sexual violence against children and teenagers are among the cases.

According to the data, the number of known cases of child sexual abuse increased by 6.3 percent to over 15,500 last year. According to Holger Muench, the head of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, the annual estimates only include a percentage of the cases that police are aware of; the true figures are believed to be significantly higher.

Authorities estimate that one to two students per school class in Germany are affected by sexual violence.

Muench also said that more people are reporting suspicions of child abuse than in the past.

“We very much welcome this: serious acts of violence against children and young people, as the weakest members of society, must be particularly outlawed, prosecuted and brought to an end,” he said.
