CHINESE CITY OF WUHAN SHUTS DOWN BUSINESSES, TRANSPORTS OVER FOUR COVID CASES

Wed 27 July 2022:

China’s Wuhan the sprawling city where the pandemic first emerged, has ordered the closure of some businesses and public transportation after authorities discovered four cases of COVID-19 in

Wuhan’s Jiangxia district, home to nearly 1 million people, announced on Wednesday that large group events and restaurant dining would be prohibited, as well as the closure of certain public entertainment venues and agricultural markets, as well as the suspension of bus and subway services for the next three days.

Residents were also advised not to leave the area during the three-day period, and visitors were advised not to enter.

The restrictions come after officials in the central city of 11 million people said they had detected two cases during regular mass testing and two more while screening close contact individuals.

Under China’s ultra-strict “dynamic COVID zero” policy, authorities across the country have imposed lockdowns and mass testing affecting millions of people in areas where even a handful of infections have been detected.

China claims to have one of the lowest COVID-19 death rates in the world, but as the pandemic enters its third year, concerns have been raised about whether the zero-tolerance policy can be sustained given the high economic and social costs. Many economists are skeptical that China will be able to meet its 5.5 percent growth goal for this year due to Beijing’s strict pandemic laws.
