Due to a lack of favorite food brought in by tourists who have been kept away by the COVID-19, hungry monkeys on the resort island of Bali have begun invading residents’ homes in search of something good to eat. Bananas, peanuts, and other treats are among the monkeys’ favorite foods.

According to villagers in Sangeh, gray long-tailed macaques have started going out from a sanctuary about 500 meters away to hang out on roofs and wait for the right moment to swoop down and take food.

Residents have been bringing fruits and other food to the Sangeh Monkey Forest in the hopes of preventing a full-scale monkey attack in the future.

“We’re terrified the hungry monkeys may turn crazy and aggressive,” said villager Saskara Gustu Alit.

The forest sanctuary is home to approximately 600 sacred macaques. They leap near the famed Pura Bukit Sari temple while swinging on the towering nutmeg trees.

The Sangeh Monkey Forest used to receive over 6,000 visitors each month, but that number has decreased to around 500 owing to the pandemic and restrictions on international travel. These monkeys have suffered as a result of this.
