The EU has decided to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, arguing that Moscow’s military strikes on energy infrastructure, hospitals, schools and shelters violate international law.
The move is mainly symbolic since the European Parliament does not have a legal framework to support it.
The bloc has already placed significant sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy welcomes ‘state sponsor of terrorism’ label on Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomes the decision by the European Parliament to designate Russia as a “state sponsor of terrorism.”
Zelenskyy said on Twitter: “I welcome the European Parliament’s decision to recognise Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and as a state which uses means of terrorism.
“Russia must be isolated at all levels and held accountable in order to end its long-standing policy of terrorism in Ukraine and across the globe.”
