EU: WON’T RECOGNIZE ISRAEL’S NEW SETTLEMENTS IN JERUSALEM

Middle East World

Fri 29 October 2021:

On Friday, the EU underlined its demand that Israel stop expanding settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, warning that any additional adjustments to the pre-1967 borders that are not agreed upon by the parties will be rejected by the bloc.

“Settlements are illegal under international law and constitute a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-state solution and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace between the parties,” according to a statement from the office of EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

The EU would not accept any alterations to the pre-1967 borders, particularly those pertaining to Jerusalem, that are not agreed upon by the parties, according to the statement.

The statement called on Israel’s government to reverse recent actions that are incompatible with continuing attempts to de-escalate tensions and instead focus on advancing meaningful re-engagement between the warring parties.

“The EU will continue to play its part supporting steps towards sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” it added.
