FAR-RIGHT PARTY REFORM UK VOWS TO SUSPEND ASYLUM SYSTEM FOR UP TO 5 YEARS IF ELECTED

Tue 13 October 2026:

Far-right party Reform UK leader Nigel Farage pledged Monday to suspend the UK’s asylum system for up to five years if his party wins the next general election, including voiding outstanding applications, as part of a proposed crackdown on immigration.

Speaking at a news conference, Farage said a Reform government would end the asylum system for its first parliamentary term, arguing that the UK can no longer afford the security risks associated with its current arrangements.

“We will end the asylum system for up to five years,” he said.

“We literally have no idea who is here, and we frankly can’t afford to take the risk. It’s not as if we’ve been ungenerous over the course of the last decade,” he added.

Under his party’s proposals, suspending the system would also invalidate pending asylum applications.

Farage said a Reform government would seek to deport all foreign nationals convicted of crimes and people residing in the UK illegally.

He described the policy as an effort to restore national security and strengthen border controls.

He said he would prioritize making Britain “a country that puts national security at the top of the agenda, a country that does everything it can to protect its own citizens, and a country that detains and deports people that come illegally, as virtually every other country in the world does.”

Farage said the party also proposed imposing visa and flight restrictions, and potentially tariffs, on countries that refuse to accept the return of their nationals, citing Pakistan as an example.

The proposals would involve disapplying the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, to which the UK is a signatory.

The convention establishes international obligations to protect refugees, including the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits returning people to territories where they face specified threats to their life or freedom.

Farage accuses Burnham of lying over claims of Russian interference in Brexit referendum

At the same news conference, Farage accused Prime Minister Andy Burnham of lying over claims of Russian interference in the 2016 Brexit referendum, calling him “a liar. Yes, a liar.”

Citing remarks by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, also formerly Britain’s top diplomat, Farage said: “Boris Johnson, when he became foreign secretary, one of the first questions he asked was: ‘Was there seen to be Russian interference in referendum campaign?’ And the answer was no.”

The UK left the EU in 2020, four years after a referendum in which about 52% of voters chose to leave.

At the ruling Labour Party’s annual conference last month, Burnham said Britain should look at different options for its relationship with the European Union, including possibly rejoining the bloc.
