FIRE AT CAIRO CHURCH KILLS AT LEAST 41 PEOPLE

A church fire on Sunday in the Egyptian city of Giza resulted in at least 41 fatalities and 45 injuries, according to officials,

According to security sources, a stampede occurred after an electrical fire broke out as 5000 worshipers gathered for mass at the Abu Sifin church in the Imbaba area.

The death toll was initially estimated at 35; AP released the increased figure of 41 just before noon.

Egyptian president El-Sisi wrote on Facebook this morning: ‘I have directed all relevant state agencies and institutions to take all necessary measures, immediately, to deal with this incident and its effects and to provide all aspect of healthcare to the injured.

‘My sincere condolences to the families of the innocent victims who moved to their Lord’s neighbor in a house from his homes where he is worshipped.’

The church has a nursery raises concerns that many of the deceased may be children.

The fire is believed to have been started by a generator that exploded, which subsequently created a stampede.

According to the police, an electrical short-circuit was the primary cause.

According to the statement, the fire started on Sunday morning as congregation was getting started.

A local news source reported, the unfortunate occurrence also claimed the life of the parish priest.

Coptic Christians make up about ten per cent of Egypt’s primarily Muslim population.
